Solar Has Saved New England Utility Customers Over $1.1 Billion Since 2014

A new report analyzing data from New England’s power grid operator, ISO New England, has found that small-scale solar, or behind-the-meter solar, has saved over $1.1 billion since 2014. The report was done by Synapse Economics, a consulting firm that specializes in energy, economic, and environmental issues, and included recent data that became available in July 2020.

New England Predicted to Have Enough Power This Summer

ISO New England predicts the region will have enough generation capacity this summer. Even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to alter energy demand patterns throughout New England, the ISO is able to adjust and respond to this uncertainty. Solar and Wind generated energy is also helping offset the probability of fuel constraints for natural gas-fired generation, which has been a concern during previous summers.

Pipeline Upgrades to Increase Natural Gas Capacity to New England

Natural gas pipeline constraints have been an ongoing concern for New England. The region’s current infrastructure and lack of pipeline have made it difficult to transport enough supply of natural gas into the six states during high-demand periods during the winter because it is being used for heat, consistently leaving power generators without the supply needed to perform.

The Impact of COVID-19 Across the Energy Market

Due to the continuing crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a disruption throughout the energy sector due to a lessening in demand, unstable supply chains, and decreased regulatory attention, negating the previously anticipated growth forecast. This is largely due to a slowing global economy and subsequently a slowing demand for energy. Many questions have arisen on the best way to combat these changes.

The Effects of COVID-19 on the Energy Supply Market

The spread of COVID-19 has had a significant effect on financial markets around the world. Virus-related shutdowns have impacted economies and businesses in ways that were not thought possible a month ago. The energy sector is one of the many industries experiencing an impact and communicating these impacts to end users can help them manage their risks and costs during this time.
